What has changed
Custelligence is built in the open and changes often. Every addition or correction that affects what you see is recorded here, including the ones that fixed our own mistakes.
13 Sept 2026
Licence recalls
Quarterly recall figures with comparisons to the previous quarter and the same quarter a year earlier, split by sex and by the reasons recorded for recall. National only — recall is an offender-management event and no prison-level figure is published.
13 Sept 2026
Readable on a phone
Tables scroll rather than squash, the map and list no longer fight each other for space, establishment details stack instead of truncating, and the navigation fits a narrow screen.
13 Sept 2026
Deaths linked to establishments
Fatal incident investigations are now matched to the prison they relate to, so they appear on that establishment’s page rather than only in a national list. PPO’s listing never names the establishment, so each investigation page is read individually.
13 Sept 2026
Two dates, stated plainly
The home page now leads with the national figures from the weekly bulletin, and shows the per-establishment figures separately with their own date. The two are collected differently and months apart, so presenting them under one date was misleading.
13 Sept 2026
Weekly bulletin
A new page tracking the national population against useable operational capacity, from the bulletin MoJ publishes every Friday. Each bulletin carries figures for previous Fridays too, so the series builds itself backwards.
13 Sept 2026
Always the latest figures
Population and capacity now come from whichever monthly release GOV.UK has most recently published, found automatically rather than set by hand. The as-at date is read from the bulletin itself, so the figures and their date can never drift apart.
13 Sept 2026
Healthy prison assessments
HM Inspectorate of Prisons rates every establishment against four tests — safety, respect, purposeful activity, and rehabilitation and release planning. Each prison page now shows the Inspectorate's own ratings from its most recent inspection, with a link to the report.
13 Sept 2026
Deaths in custody
Fatal incident investigations from the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman, recorded by date, category and establishment type. Names are not stored; each entry links to PPO, where the report sits with its proper context.
13 Sept 2026
Inspection report archive
The full HM Inspectorate of Prisons back catalogue, not just recent reports. Around 700 reports matched to establishments on the first pass.
13 Sept 2026
Operator accuracy
Contracted-out establishments are now identified only where GOV.UK both describes the prison as privately run and names the operator in an attributing phrase. This removed several wrong attributions to named companies.
13 Sept 2026
Complete estate
Establishment discovery now reads the published GOV.UK collection rather than ranked search results, bringing the count to the full 123.
12 Sept 2026
Population and crowding
Monthly MoJ population and capacity figures, stored as dated snapshots so occupancy can be read as a trend rather than a single number.
12 Sept 2026
Custody Map
Every establishment plotted and filterable, with a page for each one.
